Bobby Baun was known more for his toughness and bodychecks, thus the nickname ”Boomer.
But the Maple Leafs defenceman will long be remembered for an overtime winning goal in Game 6 the 1964 Stanley Cup final against Detroit.
After stopping a Gordie Howe shot, Baun was taken off the ice on a stretcher, but returned in overtime to score the winner, that inspired Toronto to victory in Game 7 and the team’s third straight Cup.
Following the series, x-rays showed the shot had broken a bone above the ankle.
Baun’s and the Leafs last title came in 1967.
After spending his first 11-years with the Leafs, Baun joined the California Seals in 1967-68, and finished up his career in Detroit in 1972-73.
