The death toll in the Maui wildfires has now reached 61 (as or Friday morning) and is expected to go higher.

Among those impacted; Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood, whose waterfront restaurant in Lahaina was destroyed.

Fleetwood posted on social media that he and his staff are heartbroken.  At this point the status of the 76-year old musician’s  home, which is also in West Maui, is unclear.

We’re also hearing harrowing first-hand accounts of how some Maui residents managed to escape.

A 70-year-old retired mailman says he didn’t know about the fire until he smelled smoke, then tried leave in his Jeep, but had to abandon the vehicle and run to the shore when cars nearby began exploding.

He managed to hide behind a seawall for hours, until firefighters eventually arrived and escorted him and other survivors through the flames to safety.
