Saying he’s happy to be back in Toronto and that he cannot wait for tomorrow, Jose Bautista signed a one-day contract to finally declare his career over.
”I think everybody knew for a while that I had, you know, been retired, but this is the way to make it official,” said the 42-year-old Blue Jays great, who’ll forever be remembered by fans for The Bat Flip for his iconic homerun during the 2015 playoffs.
”There aren’t many names as synonymous with Blue Jays baseball as Jose Bautista, and it is our great honour that he will officially retire in a Blue Jays jersey,” said team President and CEO Mark Shapiro.
”On behalf of a generation of Blue Jays fans that had the privilege of watching his clutch moments on the field and inspiring work ethic – thank you, Jose, for a mesmerizing decade representing the Toronto Blue Jays.”
The signing comes the day before Bautista’s name will be added to the ”Level of Excellence” at the Rogers Centre, which honours the best in franchise history.
He’ll join George Bell (1996), Dave Stieb (1996), Joe Carter (1999), Cito Gaston (1999), Tony Fernandez (2001), Pat Gillick (2002), Tom Cheek (2004), Paul Beeston (2008), Carlos Delgado (2013) and Roy Halladay (2018).
