It’s going to take a few weeks, however social media giant Meta has starting removing news for all of its Facebook and Instagram users in Canada.
Meta had been blocking news content for some Canadians (up to 5%) in response to the passage of a law in June that will require big tech companies to pay media outlets for news content they share or otherwise repurpose on their platforms.
”In the future, we hope the Canadian government will recognize the value we already provide the news industry and consider a policy response that upholds the principles of a free and open internet,” said Rachel Curran, Meta’s head of public policy in Canada.
”It’s like Nineteen Eighty-Four,” claims Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.
”Who would ever had imagined that in Canada the federal government would pass laws banning people from effectively seeing the news?”
