Myanmar’s military-led government has decreased the prison sentences of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a clemency that is connected to a religious holiday in the largely Buddhist country.
Former President Win Myint also had his sentence shortened as part of the clemency that was granted to over 7,000 prisoners.
But 78-year old Suu Kyi must still must serve a total of 27 years out of the original 33 she was imprisoned for.
According to state media Tuesday, the head of Myanmar’s military council, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, granted the clemency order to reduce the sentences in five cases against Suu Kyi in which she had been convicted for illegally importing and possessing walkie-talkies, violating coronavirus restrictions and sedition.
