Justin Trudeau is commenting on asylum-seekers recently forced to camp out on Toronto streets after being turned away from the city’s overwhelmed shelter system.

“It is unacceptable that in a country like Canada that vulnerable refugees have to sleep in the streets, or vulnerable asylum claimants,” said Trudeau in Hamilton where he announced more funding for housing in that city.

The Prime Minister met recently with Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and is vowing to be part of the mix when it comes to solving the crisis.

“But the solution requires all of us to step up together, and yes the federal government will be there but when it comes to settling asylum seekers, again, municipalities and provinces have the large part of the responsibility on that.”

Last week, Mayor Olivia Chow said the the $97 million in funding from Ottawa to deal with the shelter space shortage is not enough and renewed her call for more.
