The Olympic champs were stunned 4-0 and knocked out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup by host Australia.
A win or draw would have moved the seventh ranked Canadians into the round of 16.
Instead, they head home, finishing third in Group B with a record of 1-1-1, becoming the first defending Olympic champ not to get out of the first round of a World Cup.
It’s also Canada’s worst showing at the tournament since going winless in 2011.
Veteran midfield Sophie Schmidt, who’d previously said she was retiring from international football, said after the loss she feels ”gutted, heartbroken.”
Coach Bev Priestman says it breaks her heart to think this could be captain Christine Sinclair’s final match.
The 40-year-old is the all-time leading scorer in international soccer — women or men.
If she had scored at the tournament, she would have become the first –female or male, to score in six World Cups.
