It’s byelection day in two provincial ridings, one of which is in the city of Toronto.
Scarborough-Guildwood has been vacant since long time Liberal MPP Mitzie Hunter resigned in May to run for Toronto’s mayor.
Toronto City Councillor Gary Crawford is running for Doug Ford’s PCs in the riding and has an endorsement from former Toronto mayor John Tory who’s been robocalling residents ahead of the byelection to support his former city budget chief.
Liberal candidate and small business owner Andrea Hazell says she’s not concerned about that.
“It does not bother me at all,” Hazell explained, “because what I’m coming to this campaign with is confidence, energy, and focus on what matters most to Scarborough residents.”
The candidate for the official opposition New Democrats is community and non-profit advocate, Thadsha Navaneethan.
The Ottawa-area seat of Kanata-Carleton was vacated in March when Ford cabinet minister Merrilee Fullerton suddenly resigned.
Turnout was low in advance polls, with just 7.3 percent of registered voters casting their ballots over three days last week in Kanata-Carleton, while Scarborough-Guildwood saw only 3.6 percent turnout.
