Mental Health Minister Carolyn Bennett made a pair of announcements Monday.
First that the government’s putting $156-million over three-years toward a new, free, three-digit suicide-prevention hotline, and secondly that she won’t run in the next election, whenever that is.
First elected in 1997 after working as a family doctor and an associate professor at the U of T, Bennett said she met with Justin Trudeau to let the prime minister know, adding serving the people of Toronto-St. Paul’s has been the ”best job.”
Before her current cabinet role, she was minister of Crown-Indigenous relations and minister of Indigenous and northern affairs.
Bennett served as minister of state for public health under former prime minister Paul Martin.
Starting November 30, Canadians in crisis will be able to dial 988 anywhere in the country to be connected with trained responders 24-hours-a-day by phone or text message.
Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health will operate the hotline.
