A section of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan to curb the powers of Israel’s justice system has unanimously passed in the Knesset.
Opposition lawmakers chanting ”shame” stormed out of the chamber, allowing the measure to pass 64-0, and resulting in large demonstrations outside parliament in Jerusalem and in central Tel Aviv.
With more protests expected, democracy advocacy group Movement for Quality Government, immediately announced it would challenge the law in the Supreme Court.
The law prevents judges from striking down government decisions on the basis they’re ”unreasonable.”
Calling it a ”sad day,” opposition leader Yair Lapid says ”this is the destruction of Israeli democracy.”
