Following a more than year-long investigation, the R-C-M-P has charged a retired officer with foreign interference.

Sixty-year-old William Majcher is accused of helping the Chinese government identify and intimidate a person. Police allege Majcher used his network of Canadian contacts to get intelligence or services that benefited the People’s Republic of China.

He was arrested in Vancouver, Thursday night and appeared via videoconference at the Longueuil, Que. courthouse Friday.

A national security investigation into Majcher’s suspicious activities began in the fall of 2021.

Police have not said who was the target of Beijing’s alleged intimidation campaign.
