Law enforcement and emergency response agencies across Canada are considering joining tens of millions of people now using Threads.
For several years, Twitter has been a go-to source for real-time information from public agencies, largely on situations that impact safety.
Threads launched during a tumultuous time for Twitter, following its takeover by billionaire Elon Musk, whose leadership has driven many users to look for alternative platforms.
Some Canadian public agencies have already migrated to Threads, but many others are still weighing whether to launch an account.
Early adopters include police services in Calgary and Edmonton.
The R.C.M.P. says it will consider using Threads, but is sticking with its existing platforms for the time being, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.
Threads was launched by Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
