Here’s why Mayor Olivia Chow and other advocates feel the issue of shelter for refugee claimants is a crisis.
In September 2021, 530 sought space every night.
This past May, it was over 28-hundred.
A 500% increase in less than two years, forcing many to sleep on the street.

Many Wong of the Christie Refugee Welcome Centre says no claimants should be sleeping on the streets and that governments should be ashamed of themselves for passing the buck.
”We’re calling on all levels of government to do the right thing. No refugee claimant should sleep on the street one night more, not one single night more.”
As senior staff of all levels of government met Friday afternoon, Mayor Chow says she’s looking for concrete solutions to end the crisis, as well as a longer term action plan to provide refugees ”dignified” shelter and housing when they arrive.
Chow adds that includes the nearly $160-million the City’s spending for existing shelter spaces and support with more shelter space, housing and personnel.
