Canadians already eligible for the GST/HST credit are expected to receive an additional special payment on Wednesday July 5th to help with the rising cost of groceries.
The Trudeau Liberals have dubbed it the grocery rebate. It was promised in the spring federal budget to help lower and middle income Canadians cope with food inflation.
The rebate in varying amounts is issued to about 11-million Canadians who either have a houshold income of $38,000 or less or an individual income of $32,000 or less.
You will receive the rebate if you qualified to get the GST/HST credit after filing a tax return for 2021.
Couples with two children can expect to receive up to an extra $467, single Canadians without children get an additional $234 and people 65 and over who qualify will receive an extra $225 each on average.
The federal Liberals also provided a similar payment last fall.
Canada’s annual inflation rate slowed to 3.4 per cent in May, but grocery prices continue to rise rapidly, with prices up 9-percent compared with May of last year.
