Rioters clashed with police across cities in France during a fifth night of unrest fueled by the police killing of a teenager.
Police made 719 arrests nationwide by early Sunday after a mass security deployment of some 45,000 officers, aimed at curbing France’s worst social upheaval in years. Over one thousand arrests were reported by the government on Saturday.
The growing crisis is posing a new challenge to President Emmanuel Macron’s leadership, and is exposing deep-seated discontent in low-income neighborhoods over discrimination and lack of opportunity.
On Saturday President Macron appealed to parents to keep children off the streets and blamed social media for fueling unrest.
The 17-year-old whose death on Tuesday sparked the anger was buried Saturday in a Muslim ceremony.
