His final and confidential report on foreign meddling filed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, David Johnston’s term as special rapporteur is over.
The former governor-general had recently announced his intention to step down, citing the atmosphere around his work had become too partisan.
His interim report last month concluded a public inquiry would not be the way to go, further angering opposition parties, that had accused him of being too close to Trudeau.
Johnston was appointed to the position in March as the government had faced mounting pressure to examine alleged Chinese interference in the last two federal elections.
