Sheldon Harnick has died of natural causes at 99.
He was part of a musical-theatre songwriting duo with Jerry Bock in the ’50’s and ’60’s.
Known for his wry, subtle humour and deft wordplay, Harnick first hit success for the music and lyrics to Fiorello! which earned a Tony and a rare Pulitzer Prize in 1960.
‘Fiddler’ ran on Broadway from 1964 to 1972 and spawned many popular songs, including “Sunrise, Sunset” and “If I Were a Rich Man.”
By the time the musical closed, it was the longest-running show in Broadway history, a distinction replaced later by “Grease.”
