China’s president has ordered a national safety campaign after a large cooking gas explosion at a barbecue restaurant in the northwest killed 31 people and injured at least seven others on the eve of a long holiday weekend.

State media say the blast ripped through the restaurant Wednesday night in the capital of the traditionally Muslim Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

President Xi Jinping called for urgent treatment for the injured and a safety overhaul following the explosion.

The deadly blast occured on the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival, a national holiday devoted to racing boats propelled by teams of paddlers, and eating rice dumplings.

Industrial accidents occur frequently in China, often due to poor oversight, corruption and lax safety practices.
