The parent company of Facebook and Instagram – META- has announced it’s making good on its threat to block news sharing on both platforms across Canada.

It’s in response to Ottawa’s online news bill that’s been passed into law by the Senate.

“We have repeatedly shared that in order to comply with Bill C-18 … content from news outlets, including news publishers and broadcasters, will no longer be available to people accessing our platforms in Canada,” said Meta in a media statement.

The government says Bill C-18 is an effort to throw a lifeline to a journalism industry that the Liberals say has been hurt by tech titans’ domination of the digital advertising market.
