Six of the 10 seniors who were injured in a bus crash that killed 15 others are in critical condition according to health officials. Another four patients are being cared for in a surgical unit.

Dr. Shawn Young with Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre says age will be a factor in recovery.

“Age does have a big impact on our ability to withstand injuries like this so it will impact their recovery it will impact their outcomes as well, this is an elderly cohort of patients and so recovery will be long and of course could be complicated.”

Sandra Kaleta is a member of the seniors’ centre where the bus tour started, and says she knew people on the bus. Kaleta says she was thinking of joining the bus trip, but changed her mind.

Police are still piecing together what caused a crash between a semi-trailer and a bus carrying seniors on a day trip to a casino. RCMP are expected to hold a news conference late Thursday afternoon.
