Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino faced intense questioning over his staff’s knowledge of Paul Bernardo’s transfer to a medium security prison.
Mendicino would only say that he should have been briefed earlier, and that he’s made it clear to his staff that it shouldn’t happen again.
“What’s important is that these issues are identified and corrected and so that is what I have done with my team to ensure there is no further breakdown in information flow, it is important that I get those briefings in a timely manner and that’s been made abundantly clear,” Mendicino told reporters.
He offered no specifics on why Prime Minister Justin Trudeau knew about the Bernardo transfer before he did.
Conservatives have been calling for Mendicino to step down or be fired over his office’s handling of the information that the convicted killer and serial rapist was being moved out of maximum-security prison.
