There are currently 200 wild fires burning across Canada displacing 32,000 Canadians from their homes.
Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair was asked if it’s time for Canada to invest in a national fire fighting service to respond to wildfires in the future.
“Response for wildfires has historically always been with the provinces and territories local authorities and they have the resources, and it’s always been the responsibility of the federal government to provide support and lend assistance when the situation in a particular province exceeds their ability to deal with it,” said Blair.
Blair says Canada can draw upon additional resources from other governments like the U.S and says the government will learn from this year’s wildfire experience about future investments.
Meantime many Quebec fire evacuees are heading back home as the situation there improves but elsewhere gusty winds are fueling a huge fire in B.C.
And the number of active fires in this province continues to grow now at 67, up 5 from Sunday.
