Astrud Gilberto, the Brazilian singer whose English-language cameo on ”The Girl from Ipanema” made her a voice of bossa nova, has died at 83.
Born in the state of Bahia, Brazil and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Gilberto became a true overnight superstar thanks to knowing just enough English when she accompanied her acclaimed guitarist husband Joao Gilberto to New York in 1963 to help him as a studio translator when he cut an album with jazz legend, saxophonist Stan Getz.
When time came to record the English lyrics for ”The Girl from Ipanema,” Gilberto volunteered.
The song was an instant hit and won Grammy Award in 1965 for record of the year.
”The Girl from Ipanema” became an all-time standard, often ranked just behind ”Yesterday” as the most covered song in modern times.
