Seniors are being impacted by the wildfires in the Halifax area where Bill VanGorder lives.

CARP’s Chief Operating and Police Officer tells Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer that in addition to nursing homes and hospitals being evacuated, there’s one especially vulnerable group who need help.

“And those are seniors who live in apartments both in apartment buildings and apartments that are just a part of someone’s home and many of them are not only displaced, but unfortunately we’re discovering they didn’t have insurance on their home,” said VanGorder.

A wildfire burning northwest of Halifax is now 85% contained, as Nova Scotia received much-needed rain Saturday.

This is already Canada’s worst spring wildfire season to date, and the outlook for the rest of the year offers little reason for optimism.

There are more than 400 active fires burning across the country and officials say the risk levels are set to increase from June and remain through the summer.
