In light of the vote by York Catholic School Board trustees to not fly the Pride flag, Education Minister Stephen Lecce stopped short of directing all boards to fly the flag.

Lecce responded by saying his government will actively take part in Pride to celebrate with the L-G-B-T-Q community.

“We believe the Pride flag is something we can rally behind, it represents a welcome, inclusive message for every child and we know that those kids face disproportionate impacts and challenges in schools.”

And MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam – who’s openly gay – tweeted her anger in a tweet that says “shame on them.”

“When school boards don’t take action to keep their students and friends safe, and that’s the message they should have received that they are loved and supported but instead what the school board said contradicts all that,” said Wong-Tam.

Meantime, the Toronto District School Board will raise the Pride Flag at its education headquarters tomorrow afternoon.
