Special rapporteur David Johnston is expected to release his decision Tuesday on whether the governing Trudeau Liberals should call a public inquiry on foreign interference.

With allegations that China’s government meddled in the last two federal elections dominating political chatter for months, experts say an inquiry would allow for a detailed, transparent conversation about what kind of threat Canada is actually facing.

David Salvo is with the Alliance for Securing Democracy in the U.S.

He says that Chinese government interference is a partisan issue and this dynamic he says, plays into Chinese, Russian and other authoritarian regimes’ attempts to get involved in Canadian politics.

“The more that Canadians are divided over this particular question, the more it is really a gift to those regimes who are trying to amplify distrust in the integrity of Canadian elections,” Salvo told CP24, “So it’s dangerous to future Canadian elections, never mind what happened in 2021.”

The former governor general is scheduled to give a news conference at noon upon releasing the report publicly.
