Canada’s industry minister Francois Philippe Champagne says an offer from the Ontario government to put more money toward an electric vehicle battery plant deal with Stellantis shows they’re making progress in negotiations.

Stellantis and L-G Energy Solution are building the $5-billion-dollar plant in Windsor, but have now warned they are implementing contingency plans because the federal government hasn’t lived up to an agreement to match subsidies on offer in the United States.

However, the federal government has asked Ontario to come up with more cash, and while the province initially seemed to bristle at the notion, since it didn’t make the subsidy commitments, Premier Doug Ford now says his provincial government is offering more money.

While not offering a specific dollar figure, Champagne says these latest moves indicate officials at both the provincial and federal levels are finalizing the deal and getting things back on track.
