When the curtain falls on “Aida” Thursday night in New York, it will mark the final time for the the second-most performed production in the Metropolitan Opera’s 140-year history.
By then, Sonja Frisell’s lavish version of Aida will have been seen for the 262nd and final time.
It opened in December 1988 since then the six principal singers in the Triumphal Scene have been joined by 150 actors, 94 choristers, 62 spears, 41 swords, 16 dancers, 15 shields, eight axes and four feather fans.
A new version by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer is to open during the Met’s 2024-25 season.
