Ontario elementary teachers federation members call results from a new  survey “alarming.”

It finds 77 % have personally experienced violence or witnessed violence against another staff member.

When asked how his government plans to tackle violence in elementary schools, Doug Ford offered a colourful answer.

“If I ever went up a hit a teacher I’d get twice the hit when I got home, and I think everyone out there would say the same thing” Ford told reporters. “When we all grew up, that’s the last thing you’d think, hitting a teacher or showing violence towards a teacher and I think honestly, it starts at home,” said Ford.

While never directly answering how his government will deal with growing violence, he would only say he could never the job of a teacher.

The province has previously announced funding for mental health supports in education.
