Ontario’s premier says a decision on possible independence of municipalities within Peel Region is coming.

“Well, hopefully very soon,” Doug Ford told reporters Thursday as Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie continues to push for her city to become independent.

Mississauga, Brampton under Patrick Brown, and Caledon make up Peel Region and share services like paramedics, health programs and recycling.

“Our goal, and I know it’s Mayor Brown’s goal, is to make sure they have equal or better service,” Ford explained, “No one being left behind, one region is taking more money than the other. We’re going to have to make sure that’s split equally.”

In a new statement, Bonnie Crombie says it’s time for Mississauga to split, claiming her city has been the “cash cow” for Peel region, covering 60 percent of the costs and subsidizing Brampton.

She claims property taxes in Brampton have been frozen by Mayor Patrick Brown thanks to investments from Mississauga.

But Mayor Brown claims Mississauga would have to pay up to one billion dollars because of infrastructure Brampton has funded for Mississauga.
