A New York jury has found Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996, awarding her $5-million in a judgment that may haunt the former president’s bid to return to the White House.
The nine-person jury rejected the 79-year-old Carroll’s claims she was raped.
The 76-year-old Trump chose not to attend the civil trial and rejected an invitation to testify, but has said he never encountered her at a Manhattan department store and didn’t know her.
Trump’s lawyers opted not to present a defense, gambling the jury would find she had failed to make a persuasive case.
The former president has said Carroll, a former Elle magazine columnist and a registered Democrat, made up ”a fraudulent and false story” to sell her 2019 memoir and to hurt him politically.
