Premier Doug Ford has announced new measures aimed at fixing what he calls a ‘broken bail’ system to keep high risk and repeat violent offenders off the streets.

“We’re pleased to announce $112 million in new funding for programs aimed at improving bail compliance and includes investments to create a dedicated team of police officers to catch high risk provincial offenders who aren’t following their bail conditions or unlawfully at large.”

The funding will support the OPP, municipal and First Nations police services, to set up dedicated bail compliance teams to assist prosecutors in gathering evidence. The funding also supports new technology to better monitor people out on bail.

Ford says people tell him regularly they feel unsafe and points to a 20 percent increase in major crime over last year in Toronto.

“We’re seeing increased in auto thefts, assaults, break and enters, and random acts of violence on public transit and on our streets.”

This follows a previous announcement by the province to scrap the post secondary education requirement for police recruits to get more boots on the ground.
