Despite owning the land the Ontario Science Centre currently occupies, the province’s main conservation organization claims it was not informed when the decision to relocate the facility was made.

The Ontario government’s option to relocate the Science Centre, develop the surrounding land, or revoke the lease agreement for the museum, which is slated to end in 2064, has not been discussed with the province or the City of Toronto, according to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

The T.R.C.A. says it has a management agreement with the city that gives it ownership of the roughly 32 hectares of land in Toronto’s west end.

These properties, according to the conservation authority, are home to ravines, green space, and delicate habitats that are dangerous to develop on. They also comprise a piece of the Science Centre.

The authority cautions that future development must take place outside of the hazardous lands in accordance with provincial, municipal, and T.R.C.A. policies.

It claims to have contacted the Ontario government for clarification and is interested in finding out more about the ideas put out by the province.

The Ontario Science Centre will relocate to a renovated Ontario Place on Toronto’s waterfront in 2025 as part of a province-wide plan to develop more affordable housing on the museum’s current lands.

European company Therme Group is also set to build a massive spa and waterpark and Live Nation has plans to build an outdoor concert venue at the site.

The plans have prompted criticism from the Opposition and advocates who do not want to see a private spa at a public park.
