While in Ukraine’s capital Thursday, NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg has defiantly declared that Ukraine deserves to join the military alliance and pledged continuing support.
It is his first visit to Kyiv since Vladimir Putin’s Russian war began nearly 14 months ago.
Stoltenberg announced more weapons from the Netherlands and the United States would be sent to Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged Stoltenberg to push for even more from NATO including warplanes, artillery and armored equipment.
“Let me be clear, Ukraine’s rightful place is in the Euro-Atlantic family,” Stoltenberg told a press conference. “Ukraine’s rightful place is in NATO.”
Stoltenberg said he and Zelenskyy discussed a NATO support program.
“This will help you transition from Soviet-era equipment and doctrines to NATO standards and ensure full interoperability with the alliance,” Stoltenberg said. “NATO stands with you today, tomorrow and for as long as it takes.”

The NATO chief has been instrumental in marshaling support from members.
The Kremlin has given various justifications for going to war, but repeated in a statement Thursday that preventing Ukraine from joining NATO was a key goal behind its invasion.
