The world-famous Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow has removed a ballet from its repertoire dedicated to the equally world-famous Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev.

The Bolshoi claims it is only following a new Russian law that expands restrictions on activities seen as promoting LGBT rights.

The law, which went into effect last December, bans advertising, media and online resources, books, films and theatre productions deemed to contain “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” and expands on a 2013 ban on such ”propaganda” aimed at minors.

The ballet, simply entitled “Nureyev,” premiered in 2017.  It focuses on the life and times of the dancer who defected from, what was then, the Soviet Union to the West in 1961.

He died in France in 1996 at the age of 54.
