There is good news for TTC subway riders.

A news release from Rogers Communications, released Monday night, says it’s buying the company which owns the wireless network in Toronto’s subway system.

The telecom giant says it has entered into an agreement to purchase BAI Communications’ Canadian operations, and with this acquisition, Rogers will be able to undertake the investments required to build a comprehensive and reliable 5G network to the entire TTC subway system.

BAI was awarded a $25-million contract by the TTC in 2012 to build and operate its public WiFi and cellular network, but Freedom Mobile has been the only telecom company to sign on to provide coverage to its customers along the subway line.

The Rogers announcement says the 5G network build is expected to take approximately two years to complete with expanded access to 911 to roll out first.

Cell phone service on the subway was becoming a hot topic in the early days of the Toronto mayoral byelection campaign.

Mayoral candidate Ana Bailao has posted on Twitter … after years of waiting, there is finally a deal for cell service on Toronto’s subway.

She has been promising to make this happen if she becomes mayor

Both candidates Brad Bradford and Mark Saunders have also released statements on news of the Rogers deal, both saying it’s taken too long and with two more years to wait, it’s still too long.

Contender Mitzie Hunter also says it’s good news but wants to ensure cell service on the subway will be available for everyone regardless of their provider.
