FACING MANDATORY UPGRADES, LONG TERM CARE OWNERS CHOOSE TO SELL INSTEAD: GLOBE AND MAIL

We’re learning some “for-profit” nursing home operators in Toronto are vacating the sector rather than undertaking mandatory upgrades.

And these property sell-offs are hindering the Ford government’s promise of 60,000 new and upgraded beds by 2028.

A Globe and Mail report says many long term care home owners are selling their properties to developers rather than choosing significant construction costs.

The report goes on to say that this is an issue across Ontario with 20 for-profit homes, whose licenses expire in June of 2025, not planning to modernize their buildings.

But here in Toronto, where six of those facilities are located, demand for beds is four times higher than the provincial average.

And the owners of three of these homes have either closed or are closing their facilities.

They are Cedarvale Terrace, Vermont Square and Garden Court Nursing Home.

In response, a spokesperson for Long Term Care Minister Paul Calandra, promises any facilities set to close will not shut their doors until every resident has transferred to a new home that meets their care needs.
