As the Ford government looks at building a private spa as part of its redevelopment plans for Ontario Place, at least two high profile candidates looking to replace John Tory as mayor in June are opposed.
Former councillor deputy mayor Ana Bailao says spending $500,000,000 of taxpayers money to subsidize a spa is wrong.
She supports relocating the Ontario Science Centre to the waterfront and then building housing on the land where it is currently located.
Mayoral hopeful Josh Matlow says while he’s not opposed to the relocation idea, ”it hasn’t been really explored in any thoughtful way to understand if it’s realistic and also if the redevelopment that that candidate (Bailao) suggested can actually happen, from even a technical or engineering perspective.”
As for putting a private spa on Ontario Place land, Matlow adds he’s saying no to Doug Ford.
”We’re going to say no to the privatization of our waterfront, and as mayor we’re going to keep our waterfront here at Ontario Place, public for years to come.”
