The province is outlining steps to ensure Ontario is ready to build more homes.
But Housing Minister Steve Clark admits that the current pace is “not enough” to meet that target.
So he’s introduced new legislation to harmonize planning rules to apply to all municipalities and was asked if the sensitive Greenbelt will be carved up for further development.
“The policies we’re presenting for comment today, all existing Greenbelt protections are maintained, there’s no changes proposed in any of the documents,” said Clark. “Ontarians can rest assured that none of those recommendation are there.”
The government is also giving municipalities the power to expand their boundaries to open up more land to build housing, including allowing farmers to build three new lots on their land.
The Opposition NDP is responding. Housing critic Jessica Bell says it’s yet another bill that will fail to help everyday Ontarians struggling to find affordable housing.
“The Ford Conservatives’ plan to make housing affordable for Ontarians is not working,” writes Bell in a statement. “It has never been more expensive to rent or buy a home in this province, and that is their record. Housing starts are going down, not up. “
