Ontario’s premier is increasing pressure on the federal Trudeau Liberals to reform the Criminal Code, saying there appears to be “no urgency” from Ottawa despite continuing tragedies.

Doug Ford told the provincial legislature on Monday it’s not an exaggeration to say people are now dying because of the failures in our justice system.

“Safety doesn’t know and criminals don’t look at borders. They don’t go from a riding in Etobicoke, a riding out in Scarborough, or a riding downtown and say, oh I’m in a different riding,” Ford explained, “They don’t care about the people, they don’t care about the communities, they don’t care about keeping the subways safe, they just want to go out there and cause havoc in our communities.”

Ontario MPPs are debating a motion from Solicitor General Michael Kerzner calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government to immediately reform the Criminal Code to prevent violent and repeat offenders from being released back into our communities.

The motion follows a spate of violent incidents including the fatal stabbing of 16 year old Gabriel Magalhaes at TTC’s Keele subway station last month.

A judge had warned this past September that the accused in that murder was a threat to the public if he did not get aid for his mental health and substance abuse issues.
