The federal government now expects more Canadians with long-overdue dental needs to sign up for its insurance plan, and the health minister says that’s why the estimated cost has risen by $7 billion dollars.

The federal dental insurance plan for low- and middle-income families would benefit uninsured people with an annual household income under $90,000.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that is a group that is often left out of low-income assistance plans.

The insurance program is expected to launch at the end of the year for children under the age of 18, seniors and people with disabilities.

Full implementation is expected in 2025.
