ONTARIO DEFENDS COVERING FEWER EYE EXAMS FOR SENIORS

Ontario’s health minister is doubling down on changes to eye exam changes for seniors.

Three days after the province announced the plan, Sylvia Jones is defending it. Those 65 and older will no longer be eligible for a free eye exam once a year, it’s been extended to once very eighteen month unless they have a condition affecting their eyes such as diabetes, macular degeneration and more.

Jones says the agreement involves fine tuning questioning whether it makes more sense for more money to be spent on a healthy 65-year-old with no eye issues or a young patient with diabetes.

Optometrists withdrew from performing provincially insured eye services in 2021 amid a dispute over the amount they were being reimbursed for eye exams.
