The largest archdiocese in Canada’s Catholic Church has a new man at the helm. Montreal-native Frank Leo was officially installed as Archbishop of Toronto at a ceremony Saturday afternoon at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica downtown.

Pope Francis named Leo to serve in Toronto’s top post six weeks ago. About 1,200 people attended the mass of installation, during which Leo offered some levity in his homily with a little sports talk about the Maple Leafs and his hometown Montreal Canadiens.

Leo was first named a bishop last July. At the age of 51 he says he has about a quarter of a century to get to know his congregation. He succeeds Cardinal Thomas Collins, who offered his resignation on his 75th birthday in January of last year in compliance with a rule stating all bishops must offer to step down when they reach that age.
