Ottawa will continue the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) program beyond March 31.
The Trudeau government says Ukrainians will now have until July 15 to apply for a program that temporarily resettles Ukrainians fleeing the war.
The program allows Ukrainians and their family members of any nationality to settle in this country for up to 3-years.
It also permits successful applicants to apply for work and study permits free of charge.
Ottawa has so far received just under one-million applications since it began a year ago, and has approved 616,429 of them.
More than 133,000 have arrived in Canada.
Immigration Minister Sean Fraser says the temporary nature of the program aligns with what Ukrainians want.
”When I speak to the vast majority of Ukrainians who’ve arrived here, their hope is that Ukraine is going to win this war. They want to go home one day,” he adds.
Fraser is not saying if the program would be extended should the war continue past mid-July.
