The Department of National Defence says Canada’s top soldier has just concluded a visit to Ukraine’s capital.

According to a readout made public by the department on Saturday, General Wayne Eyre received thorough briefings from Ukrainian officials while he was in Kyiv, including from General Valerii Zaluzhnyi, his counterpart and commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces.

The report says he also met with Ukrainian soldiers, some of whom had received training from Canada as part of Operation Unifier, which sends Ukrainians to the United Kingdom and Poland for instruction.

Late last month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would donate four additional Leopard 2 main battle tanks to support Ukrainian forces in their defence against Russia’s invasion, doubling the number of tanks Canada is contributing.

An armoured recovery truck and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition will also be provided by Ottawa.

Eyre reportedly witnessed “the tangible outcomes of Canada’s help” and talked about “how Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces might contribute to Ukraine’s future needs,” according to Saturday’s readout.
