After an enormous fire erupted at a fuel depot, killing at least 18 people, Indonesian rescuers and firefighters are looking for more than a dozen missing individuals among the charred remains of destroyed homes and structures.
The state-run oil and gas corporation Pertamina’s Plumpang fuel storage facility is located in North Jakarta close to a densely populated neighbourhood.
About 25% of Indonesia’s fuel requirements are met by the facility.
The fire was put out by at least 260 firemen just before midnight on Friday after it had ravaged the neighbourhood for more than two hours.
According to a preliminary assessment, the fire started when a pipeline burst during a downpour, presumably caused by a lightning strike.
Some 1,300 people are displaced.
