The video app TikTok is being banned on government-issued mobile devices just days after federal and provincial privacy commissioners launched an investigation into the social media platform.

In a statement,  the Treasury Board says the decision follows a review that determined TikTok “presents an unacceptable level of risk to privacy and security.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was asked about the ban that takes effect Tuesday, February 28th.

“Many Canadians from businesses to private individuals will reflect on security on their own data and perhaps make choices,” said Trudeau. “I’m always a fan of giving Canadians information for them to make the right decisions for them.”

Both the U.S. and the EU also recently banned government staff from using TikTok on work-issued devices.

The company has been embroiled in privacy concerns because the Chinese government has a stake in its owner and laws allow the country to access user data.
