Everyone is talking about Jully Black’s revision to O Canada, which she sang ahead of the NBA All star game Sunday in Salt Lake City.

“O Canada, our home on native land,” Jully sang, instead of the traditional, “O Canada, our home and native land.”

Toronto’s own Jully Black joined The Morning Zoom with Sam and Jane and said she hopes to see a continuous dialogue on a possible change.

“For example, we moved to changing ‘in all our sons command’ to ‘in all of us command’, but I feel we went too far into the anthem without addressing the first line,” Black explained.

Jully says as a first generation Canadian she embraces the idea that she is living on indigenous peoples’ land.

But she also cautions, changing the lyric alone isn’t enough, and so much more needs to be done about sanitation, education and mental health in indigenous communities.
