We’re hearing more about what John Tory may be thinking and feeling four days after announcing his resignation because of a relationship with former staff member.

We found out Monday from Budget Chief Gary Crawford that Tory will stay on as Toronto’s mayor through the 2023 City of Toronto budget process.

And a Toronto Star report says sources close to Tory say he is listening closely to those urging him to stay and is not ruling out the possibility he will look for a way to rescind his resignation.

Councillor James Pasternak for one, says his impression after meeting with the mayor on Monday, was that Tory is torn about leaving office. Pasternak says Tory is getting support from people “worried about who could be in the mayor’s chair come spring” if he resigns. But the councillor also said, he doesn’t know if he can really walk this back.

Councillor Josh Matlow says he doesn’t get that Tory could be waffling. Matlow says he credits Tory for “resigning for all the right reasons” and would advise him to do what he actually believes is right, rather than testing the political waters.

Budget deliberations begin Wednesday.
