The digitization of more than 200 Boston Pops radio broadcasts conducted by John Williams from 1979 to 1991 is nearly complete.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, Williams’ 91st birthday, by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Grants totaling $24,000 were used to fund the preservation of 233 live radio broadcasts recorded on quarter-inch reel-to-reel analogue tapes that were becoming increasingly fragile and in danger of chemical deterioration.
The recordings document Williams’ collaborations with a wide range of guest performers from the entertainment industry, and several feature the first concert arrangements of many of his film scores.
